The Delta Phonics Readers
have been developed specifically to support the Delta ESL Phonics
materials—but are also perfect for reading at home with children… The Readers provide literature–based activities with important relations to reading instruction based on developmental stages of second language acquisition and research–based pedagogy. Each Delta ESL Phonics
level has a set of six readers and detailed teachers’ guides jammed packed with fun, creative activities and materials to provide easy–to–deliver, dynamic instruction to accelerate the literacy development of English language learners. The teachers’ guides suggest a series of interactive, hands–on activities for teachers to use before and after each Reader
is presented, including reproducible pages and suggestions for home–school connections.
Each set of six readers corresponds to the 4 levels of language acquisition, since teachers may have students in class at any of the 4 levels of English language acquisition (pre–production, speech emergence, early production, approaching fluency). The readers expand on the basic phonics skills as students pass through the stages of language acquisition, gain overall comprehension, and build vocabulary and proficiency in aural/oral skills, phonemic awareness, concepts of print, letter name/sound correspondence, decoding skills, word families, syntax, increased comprehension, and general fluency.
Pre–production: these books are intended to be read to the student, allowing students to focus on the sounds of the English language (phonemic awareness) and vocabulary development. These books are designed to allow students to listen to native speech and identify vocabulary by responding physically to prompts.
Speech emergence: these books are intended to allow students to listen to native speech, reproduce speech (speech emergence) attach sounds to letters (phonics; letter/sound correspondence) and develop vocabulary and decoding skills (guided reading). These books are designed to be read to and by the students in order to provide a solid model of guided reading for students and practice in beginning simple decoding. They use patterning and repetition.
Early production: these books capitalize on the students’ burgeoning sentence–level aural/oral speech levels to introduce humorous poems and patterned sentences using target vocabulary. Activities from the teachers’ guides further support important reading skills and offer suggestions to supplement instruction.
Approaching fluency: these books capitalize on the students’ near fluent aural/oral speech level to introduce narrative stories and humorous poems using target vocabulary. Activities from the teachers’ guides further support important reading skills such as fluency, comprehension, cueing skills, inferencing, and sequencing.
The Blue, Red and Purple sets have 2 books at pre–production level, 2 at speech emergence level, 1 at early production, and 1 at approaching fluency level. The Orange and Green sets have 1 at pre–production level, 1 at speech emergence level, 2 at early production, and 2 at approaching fluency level.
