Intended for junior high through adult ESL students who want to know how America got to be the way it is today, From the Beginning is intentionally written in simple language for easy reading at a low-intermediate level. Fast moving and clearly focused, the text gives students a summary knowledge of the diverse people, the philosophies, and the institutions of the United States from earliest days to the present. A major objective is to impart to the student an overall acquaintance with American history which instructors of this subject would consider to be "common knowledge."
Each of 14 chapters begins with a general overview of a period, followed by two or three stories or biographies which highlight the major drama or controversy of the time. As often as possible, maps and illustrations are original and of their time. Exercises provide practice in vocabulary development, discussion, and writing.
