Pedro yearns for the pirate’s life. Though he is only the cabin boy on Captain Crossbones’ ship, he daydreams about becoming a real pirate. When that chance finally comes, Pedro steals a mermaid’s gold locket. The mermaid chastises Pedro, but he laughs and boasts, “It’s what we pirates do!” That initial boast, however, soon gives way to regret as Pedro contemplates his actions. He resolves to return the locket and to free the mermaid that Captain Crossbones holds captive. The outcome is a happy one as Pedro expresses his contrition to the mermaid, and assures her that the pirate’s life is not for him.

The parrot clues are in Spanish that only Pedro can understand!

With an “X” marking his imagination, those riches have finally been realized with the publication of this book about pirates. Tim is a graduate of Hobart College. For the past twenty–five years he has worked as a New York City firefighter. His wife, Ellen, has been his first mate for thirty some–odd years. Arrgh!

Tim Hoppey lives in Shoreham, New York.

Illustrator
As far back as she can remember, Dianna Bonder has been drawing and writing stories of far away places and unimaginable characters. She has been inspired by unusual sources—Alice in Wonderland, James and the Giant Peach, Shel Silverstein’s writings and the infamous Dr. Suess. And now, with the addition of her daughter Ekko, her inspiration abounds. She describes her work as “Dreaming Is Believing”…if you can dream it, it can be.

Dianna Bonder lives in Gabriola, BC, Canada.
