Use the Right Tools to Build Your Child’s Language Skills
The following tips will help your child increase their vocabulary, reading comprehension, improve their oral reading skills, and build their confidence in reading orally.
Read aloud to children every day, from five to forty minutes.
Have children imitate us as we read expressively (call and response reading). When children learn how to read aloud expressively, their silent reading abilities also improve.
Teach children to read aloud; use the following six Expressive Reading Techniques.
vary the pitch: high or low
change the volume: soft or loud
punch key words in each sentence: verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions
change the rhythm: fast–slow or slow–fast
change the duration: stretch out the vowel sounds
